Elon Musk recently placed a poll on X asking whether users think America should overthrow the British government. Given his deadpan delivery, it’s hard to tell if he’s being serious about the proposition or just joking. We’ll take a look at whether the world’s richest man really wants the United States to invade the UK or if he’s just pulling our chain.
Elon Musk appears to call for the US to invade the UK
Elon Musk posted a poll asking if “America should liberate the people of Britain from their tyrannical government.” The poll came in the wake of allegations that various levels of the UK government ignored, covered up, or were complicit in a massive amount of child sexual exploitation cases.
According to The Washington Post, Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that people are “spreading lies and misinformation” and that Musk shouldn’t be interfering in foreign politics.
It appears that Musk’s poll is a result of the UK government’s response to the allegations. It’s almost certainly hyperbole meant to bring attention to the situation and not actually a call to arms. It’s not unusual for him to make dramatic, over-the-top comments and push boundaries. His goal is likely to stir engagement and debate.
So, there’s little reason to fear that Musk is stirring up support for an invasion of the UK. Even if he was serious, the country is one of the US’s closest allies. Out of the 195 UN-recognized countries in the world, the UK is probably the least likely for the US to invade. Numerous defensive and trade pacts that the two have signed, and their historical association make the proposition of war between the two a practical impossibility.
In the end, Musk’s provocative poll serves as another example of his ability to spark controversy and fuel online discourse. His antics are an attempt to bring attention to issues he’s concerned about. However, X users should research any topic before drawing any conclusions.
