Many are frustrated over Instagram not working or loading correctly on Wednesday, December 11. Not only is Instagram down, but Meta’s other social media platforms Facebook and Threads are also facing significant interruptions. As noted by DownDetector, users began reporting issues with all three platforms at around 9:30 AM PT and reports have continued to accumulate since then. Fortunately, Meta has responded to the situation and provided an update.
Why is Instagram, Facebook, and Threads down?
Instagram reports on X that “a technical issue” is the reason behind why the platform is down and it is “impacting some people’s ability to access Instagram.” It is “working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.”
A similar message was posted by Meta on its official account on X as well, with numerous users pointing out the irony that many are flocking to X to check on the status of Instagram, Facebook, and Threads.
It’s important to note that the normal fixes for Instagram not working, like restarting the app or reinstalling it from the app store, likely will not troubleshoot the issue. You will need to wait for Meta to push an update on the backend, so that the server connection is repaired.
While reports on Downdetector for Instagram and Facebook have continued to dip since around 10:00 AM PT, they have begun to plateau with around 20,000 users reporting issues with both platforms at the time of writing.
That said, this is hardly the first time that Meta’s platforms have been down, and that might not actually be a bad thing. In fact, in March 2019 when Facebook and Instagram went down, it was called the most productive day of the century.
This incident follows other massive outages, including Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office 365, and other Microsoft products all going down in late November.
