Greta Gerwig is one of her generation’s most talented and recognizable filmmakers. She accumulated four Oscar nods for her last three movies, and the latest one, Barbie (2023), even made over $1.4 billion at the global box office. Accordingly, fans became excited when it was announced that she would write and direct multiple cinematic adaptations of The Chronicles of Narnia book series by C. S. Lewis for Netflix. And now, Amy Pascal, one of the producers of this massive undertaking, has revealed when filming for the first movie would commence.
Greta Gerwig’s Narnia to start production in July 2025
Pascal disclosed in a recent interview that Greta Gerwig’s “very new” and “rock and roll” take on Narnia would start production in July 2025.
It was first reported in July 2023 that Netflix had tapped Gerwig to helm and pen the scripts for two Narnia movies. This means that the first movie would start filming exactly two years after its initial announcement. The streaming giant originally acquired the development rights for Narnia back in 2018.
While speaking to Pete Hammond, Deadline‘s awards columnist, Pascal spoke about a “couple of” Netflix projects she was currently part of, including Narnia. She clarified that the movie was not in production before revealing the July 2025 start date. She also underscored that Gerrwig’s adaptation of Lewis’ classic book series was a “very new take,” adding, “It’s all about rock and roll.”
Pascal previously worked with Gerwig on the latter’s 2019 adaptation of Little Women. Reflecting on Gerwig as a filmmaker, the Challengers producer said, “I remember the first day I met her. She barged into my office and said, ‘Little Women has been done wrong. And I know how to do it right. And it’s all about money and women.'” Pascal noted that Gerwig hadn’t made Lady Bird yet at the time.
Pascal continued, “And she [Gerwig] said, ‘I’m going to write and direct that for you.’ And I said, “Alright!” Because sometimes you know.” She later asserted, “There’s nobody like Greta.”
Notably, the other Netflix production Pascal is involved in is Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly, featuring George Clooney and Adam Sandler. Pascal confirmed that filming had wrapped on that project, and it would come out sometime in 2025.
