Cher reacts to Gene Simmons professing his love after their 1st date: ‘We hadn’t even kissed’

Cher recalled her relationship with Gene Simmons in her “Cher: The Memoir, Part One.” According to PEOPLE, the two, who were together from 1977 to 1979, met at the reception for President Gerald Ford. Cher was introduced to Simmons at the event, held by Neil Bogart, the head of her record label. She noted she mistook the KISS musician for British actress Jean Simmons when they first met. Nonetheless, Cher was “impressed” with Simmons by the end of the night.

After the reception, Simmons drove Cher home and also brought back KISS merch for her son, Chaz Bono, who the singer shares with Sonny Bono. The pair’s date the following night turned awkward as the star flirted with both Cher and her friend, the memoir revealed. When Simmons called Cher the next day to apologize to her, the latter told him she was not interested in him and neither was her friend.

However, that did not stop Simmons from pursuing Cher. The memoir reveals the former racked up a whopping $2,800 bill from talking to the latter on the phone when he traveled to Japan. Cher recalled, “That’s when he blurted out that he loved me.” The star revealed the two “hadn’t even kissed.” She also noted that they had only been out once before Simmons left. Furthermore, Cher quipped, “What is it with these men?”

Cher and Simmons’ two-year relationship ended when he reportedly left the artist for another music legend, Diana Ross.
