Netflix’s ‘Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?’ docuseries reexamines unsolved mystery
Directed by Joe Berlinger, the Netflix docuseries “Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?” was released on the streaming platform on November 25. It revisits JonBenét Ramsey’s tragic murder in 1996. John and Patsy Ramsey found out that their 6-year-old daughter was missing the day after Christmas. Moreover, a chilling ransom note was left downstairs. John later found JonBenét’s body in the basement of their home in Boulder, Colorado. It was discovered that JonBenét was sexually assaulted and brutally murdered.
According to The Washington Post, JonBenét’s mother, Patsy, called the police hours before her body was found in the basement. She reported her daughter missing and also the ransom note demanding $118,000. This was the same amount that JonBenét’s father, John, had received in a bonus during his time as the chief executive of a Lockheed Martin subsidiary.
The documentary series claims the Boulder police were inexperienced in handling homicide investigations. Meanwhile, suspicions were quickly cast on the Ramsey family. The Netflix trailer notes that “it was a case that people couldn’t stop talking about.” JonBenét’s murder mystery was extensively covered and grabbed nationwide attention during that time. The 6-year-old’s parents were suspected as the prime suspects in the public eye.
However, The Washington Post reported John and Patsy were officially cleared of suspicion in 2008 based on DNA evidence from the crime scene. JonBenét’s mother passed away in 2006 due to ovarian cancer. On the other hand, John appears in the new docuseries.
JonBenét Ramsey’s killer was never found as the case remains unsolved 28 years later. The three-part docuseries “Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?” now investigates the mishandling of the case by law enforcement and the media.
