During the interview with GQ for the 2024 Man of the Year issue, John Mulaney, who checked himself into rehab in December 2020, spoke about his experiences with his addiction to drugs and his recovery journey. The 42-year-old recalled a night in his NYC apartment when he took so much cocaine that he thought he was going to die. Mulaney shared, “I just sat on the rug and slowly came down.” He remembered thinking, “Okay, this is insane. I’m going to totally slow down.” The comedian added, “That was like a Tuesday. And Thursday night, I did it again.”

Mulaney and Olivia Munn reconnected in early 2021 after he left rehab, and the same year, she became pregnant with their first child. Munn recalled she was “watching someone newly sober,” adding that she “didn’t know him well enough to help him.” However, Munn shared that their coming baby was the one thing that made Mulaney “seem light and happy.”

When Munn was about six months pregnant, she staged a mini-intervention to get involved in Mulaney’s recovery. The pair agreed that Munn would give the comedian random drug tests. The now-married couple still practices the intervention. Mulaney said that the practice is “like a relief.” Moreover, he likes “to be able to not even have that be a question in [Munn] or anyone else’s mind.” Mulaney added, “Something about peeing in that cup is like, I’m walking this walk. It gives me confidence.”
