Delphi Double Murder Trial Update: Richard Allen Found Guilty

A jury has convicted suspect Richard Allen in the 2017 Delphi murders of Abigail Williams and Liberty German in the latest update in the high-profile trialCNN reported that jurors deliberated for 19 hours before finding Allen guilty of two counts of murder and two counts of felony murder. Abigail Williams and Liberty German went missing on February 13, 2017, while hiking on the Monon High Bridge Trail in Delphi, Indiana. Their bodies were found in a nearby area a day later.

The Delphi murder case went unsolved for five years before authorities arrested Richard Allen in 2022. While investigating the case, authorities found crucial evidence, including an unspent .40 caliber bullet near the bodies of Abigail Williams and Liberty German. They also released a grainy image of a man wearing a blue jacket and jeans following the girls shortly before the killer committed the murders. In addition, they found a recording of a man’s voice in the victim’s phone, which led them to Allen.

Delphi murders: Richard Allen sentencing date revealed

Richard Allen‘s Delphi murders trial began in October, with the latest update being the guilty verdict. The Associated Press reported that Allen’s sentencing will take place later this year on December 20 when he could get a term of up to 130 years in prison. During the closing argument, Carroll County Prosecutor Nicholas McLeland told the 12-member jury that “Richard Allen is ‘Bridge Guy,'” referring to the man from the grainy image following the victims shortly before their murders.

Throughout the Delphi murders investigation and the years-long case, investigators believed the “Bridge Guy” killed Abigail Williams, 13, and Liberty German, 14. Liberty captured a recording of this man, later ruled the primary suspect, in a Snapchat video as the two walked down an abandoned railroad bridge. Authorities believe this clip showed the girls’ last moments before the killer murdered them. Moreover, Allen seemingly confessed to his wife about committing the murders in a prison phone call. “I did it. I killed Abby and Libby,” he told his wife during the call.

The 2017 murder case from Delphi, Indiana, gained traction after authorities released the video and audio recordings of the suspect. The audio recording was of a man talking to the victims, “Guys, down the hill,” where authorities believe he murdered them and partly covered their bodies with sticks. Despite making a break in the case, they only arrested a suspect five years later in 2022.

The high-profile Delphi murder trial ended on Monday with a jury finding Richard Allen Guilty of the 2017 murders of Abigail Williams and Liberty German.
