How Long Will Paul George Be Out? Hyperextension Knee Injury & Recovery Time Explained

Many want to know how long Paul George will be out with the hyperextension knee injury he suffered during his Philadelphia 76ers preseason game on Monday, October 14. While attempting to defend Jalen Johnson of the Atlanta Hawks in the second quarter, George bent his left leg with an awkward stance. This caused him to exit the game and not return for the rest of the game. Here’s the latest update on his knee injury and the expected recovery time for Paul George to heal as the 2024 NBA season continues.

How long will Paul George’s knee injury take to heal?

The extent of Paul George’s knee injury is still unclear as it needs an official diagnosis, but the typical amount of time it takes for a hyperextension knee injury is about a week.

This is according to injury analyst Jeff Stotts, who says on X (formerly Twitter) that the term “hyperextension” is not really an actual diagnosis but more of a descriptor of what happened. He states that hyperextended knee injuries take an average of “6.4 days” to recover.

As reported by The Inquirer on Monday, George had a sleeve on his left knee following the game but was still able to walk. He received treatment for the injury and said he would see how his knee feels on Tuesday morning before evaluating the situation from there. George recounted that he “went to go take a step to go kind of burst through, and then my leg kind of hyperextended back.” Optimistically, he said that he was “not too concerned” about the injury.

This is a bit of a surprise, since George experienced a hyperextended knee injury to his right leg on March 21, 2023 against the Oklahoma City Thunder when he was playing for the Los Angeles Clippers. This took him out for more than two weeks, forcing him to sit out of nine games for the 2023 regular season.

As recorded by Fox Sports, George had a string of knee injuries early in 2024, specifically on February 25, March 8, March 10, and April 10. Daryl Morey, the president of basketball operations for the 76ers, stated to ESPN that the team had already planned to have George “probably not play many back-to-backs” during the 2024 preseason.

Paul George infamously snapped his leg in half back in 2014 during a Team USA game in Las Vegas and was on the cover of NBA 2K17.
