Marjorie Taylor Greene Comes Up With Her Wackiest Conspiracy Theory Yet

A new Marjorie Taylor Greene conspiracy theory just dropped, and it might be her wackiest claim to date. The Georgia congresswoman has claimed that “they” can “control the weather” and that “they” are somehow responsible for Hurricane Helene’s destructive effects. She went on to assert that the motive for doing this is to prevent Republicans from voting in the 2024 presidential election.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Adds Government Weather Control to Her Menagerie of Conspiracy Theories

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene took to X (formerly Twitter) to claim that a nebulous “they” are responsible for the damage caused by Hurricane Helene last week:

“Yes, they can control the weather.

It’s ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can’t be done.”

She then shared a map of the areas affected by Hurricane Helene with an electoral map overlay in an attempt to provide evidence for her theory:

“This is a map of hurricane-affected areas with an overlay of the electoral map by political party, showing how hurricane devastation could affect the election.”

Greene’s idea isn’t original. Over the years, multiple conspiracy theories involving the United States government controlling the weather have arisen. Many center around the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), which was previously run by the Office of Naval Research and the Air Force Research Laboratory. Theorists claim the government has used HAARP as a weapon to cause earthquakes, hurricanes, and other phenomena.

There’s a small grain of truth here, as with many conspiracy theories. Cloud seeding has been used for decades to increase rainfall. However, the effects generated aren’t nearly enough to create or influence a hurricane.

Greene has previously embraced other conspiracy theories as well. She’s promoted QAnon and Pizzagate and made accusations that several mass shootings were false flag attacks. Additionally, Greene has attacked President Biden’s student loan forgiveness program despite receiving forgiveness for an almost $200,000 loan from the Paycheck Protection Program during the COVID-19 pandemic.
