Thousands of Bank of America customers have reported various issues, including a $0 balance glitch and “temporarily unavailable” errors. These problems on the bank’s website and app are preventing users from accessing their accounts. According to Downdetector, customers submitted reports of the issue on Wednesday, October 2 as early as 9:30 AM PT, but at the time of writing, the problem has yet to be resolved for many. As of 2:00 PM PT, the bank has not issued a statement about what’s causing the glitch on X (formerly Twitter). That said, Bank of America has had this zero balance error happen in the past.
BoA customers report zero balance error & “accounts temporarily unavailable” issues
Back on August 5, 2020, which was also a Wednesday, Bank of America customers experienced the $0 balance glitch, as reported by KTLA.
Many could not transfer their money from savings to checking. At the time, BoA made a statement acknowledging that its clients were seeing “an inaccurate account balance in online or mobile banking” but assured that “there is no impact to their accounts and their information remains secure.”
However, the glitch being experienced by customers today looks to be far more widespread than the one in 2020. According to the Downdetector map for the outage, reports of the issue have been made in many major cities throughout the United States, including New York City, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Phoenix.
A similar issue with Bank of America accounts occurred in January 2023. Customers using Zelle, a money transfer platform, reported issues with their BoA accounts that led to negative balances and overdraft fees, per Scripps News. Senator Elizabeth Warren responded to the issue on X at the time, saying that both Bank of America and Zelle were “apparently failing customers again, with money somehow disappearing from accounts.”
