Shawn Mendes opens up about his relationship with Camila Cabello
Shawn Mendes appeared on Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” podcast on Monday to discuss his relationship with Camila Cabello, among other things. He said, “Camila and I have just done the best job at preserving our private little fire of love for each other,” before opening up about navigating through their highly publicized breakup.
“No matter how strong mentally you are, when there are millions of people commenting on it, it’s so hard not to be affected by it and to be swayed by it and to be inspired by it,” Mendes stated. He called it very “human” to want this since “people desire it or to hate it because other people hate it.” The 26-year-old feels they have “worked extremely hard to just protect each other and to protect that love.”
Shawn Mendes believes that “there’s no getting away” from people’s comments on his and Camila Cabello’s relationship. He then continued, “If I’m being completely honest, I don’t really go on social media anymore,” adding he doesn’t really bother with what other people may be saying about his romantic relationships.
The “Stitches” singer has a few additional comments about celebrity relationships. He said, “We’re not in a movie… This is real life. This is real love and love is confusing and hard and goes through dips and goes through pauses, goes through breaks, goes through so much.”
Shawn Mendes had a humbling answer to Jay Shetty’s question about what he and Camilla have done to protect their relationship. Mendes said that “immense honesty [and] over communication” has facilitated a smooth connection between him and Cabello. He stated an instance to show how they communicate and clear the air, further adding, “It immediately cuts through any type of assumption.”
Moreover, the former Fifth Harmony member and Mendes have established an “understanding” when it comes to making music as “storytellers.” The singer claimed, “I don’t think either of us would cross a line — we deeply respect each other,” asserting he is “lucky” to experience something like this with Cabello. Lastly, he called her “an amazing human being” and “incredibly understanding and thoughtful and caring.” He also added, “Communicating with her is not difficult and that’s probably a huge part of it.”
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello announced their breakup in November 2021. Back then, they had shared a joint statement on their respective Instagram stories. The statement read, “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever. We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends.”
The two were, however, spotted kissing at Coachella in Indio, California, last year, sparking dating rumors. According to People Magazine, the singers had ended their reunion by June 2023. Camila Cabello later explained her short-lived reconciliation with Shawn Mendes in a “Call Her Daddy” podcast episode in March. She claimed that it didn’t feel right to them at the time. The “Havana” singer mentioned, “It took us both less time to be like, ‘This doesn’t feel right and we don’t need to try so hard to make it work. It’s all good.'” The 26-year-old had also assured that she would always care about Mendes and called him a “really kind, good person.”
