‘Harry Potter’ Actor Dame Maggie Smith Passes Away, She Was 89

Dame Maggie Smith has passed away at the age of 89. The legendary British actor’s successful career spanned decades. Smith brought life to some of the most iconic characters, including Jean Brodie in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,” Professor Minerva McGonagall in the “Harry Potter” films, and Violet Crawley in “Downton Abbey.” As the world grieves the loss, the Oscar-winning actor will forever remain in fans’ hearts.

Dame Maggie Smith’s sons share heartbreaking note

BBC reported the devastating news was confirmed by Maggie Smith’s sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin. The statement said, “It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith.” They shared that Smith “passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September.”

The statement added that Smith “was with friends and family at the end” as she was “an intensely private person.” The multi-award-winning actor is now survived by two sons and five grandchildren, who are “devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.” The statement further noted that Smith was at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital during her final days.

Furthermore, the late star’s sons thanked the hospital’s staff for “their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.” They added, “We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”

Soon after the news broke, social media began to get flooded with condolences for the late actor. Smith’s “Downton Abbey” co-star Hugh Bonneville also paid tribute to her. He called the late actor a “true legend of her generation.” Remembering Smith, he said she “thankfully will live on in so many magnificent screen performances.” Bonneville also praised the icon and said, “Anyone who ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her sharp eye, sharp wit and formidable talent.”
