Chappell Roan took no nonsense on the red carpet of the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. When a photographer heckled her, she served their rudeness right back to them. However, to casual onlookers, it might have looked like Roan randomly started cursing. Here’s how the incident went down and how Roan handled it.
Why did Chappell Roan cuss on the VMA red carpet?
Those watching the 2024 VMAs were astonished to hear Chappell Roan cussing at the red carpet photo line. However, her reaction seems to be justified.
According to Vulture, a photographer at the VMAs shouted, “Shut the f**k up!” In response, Roan said, “You shut the f**k up!” When the photographer attempted to respond, she quieted them with, “No, Not me, b***h.”
While it’s possible the photographer wasn’t addressing Roan with their outburst, it wouldn’t be the first time that paparazzi attempted to provoke a celebrity with rude behavior. They could have done it in the hopes Roan would turn toward them so they could get the shot they wanted.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Roan expressed her perspective of the incident:
“This is quite overwhelming and quite scary. I think for someone who gets a lot of anxiety around people yelling at you, the carpet is horrifying. And I yelled back. You don’t get to yell at me like that!”
Although she’s spent almost a decade on the outskirts of the industry, Roan’s meteoric rise to stardom only began in 2023. She’s gone from a relative unknown to one of the hottest acts in music in a little over a year, which has come with challenges. She’s dealt with obsessive fans, stalkers, and unwanted physical interactions, which have led her to establish firm boundaries between herself and the public. Unfortunately for the yet-unnamed photographer, they crossed the line and got a reminder about red-carpet etiquette.
