PS5 Pro $700 Price Angers PlayStation Fans

Many PlayStation fans are less than thrilled with the PS5 Pro price, which Sony has set at a hefty $700. In fact, the phrase “For $700” is trending on X, formerly Twitter, with users shocked at the console’s price tag. This upgraded version of the PlayStation 5, unveiled on the official PlayStation blog on Tuesday, September 10, comes with one DualSense wireless controller and a 2TB SSD hard drive. However, it comes with neither a disc drive nor a vertical stand, and its price is notably higher outside of the United States.

The high $700 price tag for the PS5 Pro is being ridiculed by users across X, particularly under the “For $700” trend.

One user on X stated that for $700, people can “literally build a PC.” Another commentor, on the blog post for the PS5 Pro, shared a similar sentiment: “At that price, buy a PC. All titles are going there anyway, and are way better quality and way lower prices with no PS+ requirements.” This refers to the PlayStation Plus subscription, which is required for online multiplayer and costs $80 per year for its lowest PlayStation Plus Essential tier.

The PS5 Pro price is even higher outside of the United States. It costs £699.99 in Great Britain, which comes to around a little more than $900 USD, and €799.99 in other European countries, which comes to about $880 USD. This has led to angry reactions across the pond, with one user on X stating “For £700, I can get a pointlessly long flight from Manchester to San Francisco, travel to San Mateo and PlayStation HQ to tell them how utterly out of touch they are with PS5 Pro, and fly home again.”

Those in Japan will need to spend ¥119,980, which is roughly $840 USD, to purchase the PS5 Pro, though luckily that price includes tax.

That said, numerous fans are befuddled by the console’s lack of a disc drive, be it an internal or external one. The blog post says that players can add the optional, external Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, which costs $80 at retail. The PS5 Pro doesn’t come with a vertical stand either, which costs $30 for the standard PS5. Some are also surprised there isn’t a discounted PS5 Pro bundle that includes these two accessories.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is set to launch on November 7, 2024, with pre-orders available on September 26, 2024.
