MoviePass, the movie theater subscription service, is coming back…though whether or not anyone is interested is anybody’s guess.
You may recall that MoviePass was a short-lived success story that quietly launched in 2011 but didn’t catch on until around 2018, when millions of cinephiles caught wind of its $6.95-a-month, nearly all-you-can-watch subscription and signed up. MoviePass crashed and burned that same year.
Then came the never-ending pandemic, when nobody in their right mind would have been caught dead in a packed cineplex. Now that life is kinda-sorta back to normal (except for those monkeypox and polio threats), MoviePass decided to give its service another go.
Its “beta launch” is expected to happen in waves around Labor Day weekend and will include $10, $20, and $30 pricing options with varying credits towards movie theater tickets.
According to MoviePass’ website, the service will be available at theaters across the U.S. that accept major credit cards, so…every movie theater?
If you’re one of the few people who can’t wait to watch (a lot) of movies on a big screen again while in the presence of annoying strangers, well, there’s a waitlist that goes live today. You’ll have five days to sign up, after which MoviePass will become invitation-only…because that’ll work.
We don’t know about you, but after spending the last two-plus years watching movies on our laptops in our underwear from the comfort of our beds, MoviePass would have to pay us to get dressed and go out to a theater to get our entertainment fix.
