The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp Star in New HBO Show ‘The Idol’ (See the Wild Trailer Here)

Pop music. Underground cults. The Weeknd. What more could you ask for? If all those things entice you, you’ll definitely be tuning in to The Idol, a new TV show coming to HBO.

The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) will make his TV acting debut in the drama, which he also wrote and produced. (Multi-talented, this dude.)

According to Variety, The Idol “is set against the backdrop of the music industry. The plot follows a self-help guru and cult leader who develops a complicated relationship with an up-and-coming pop idol.”

Guess which role The Weeknd took on? The cult leader, of course. Lily-Rose Depp (yup, that’s Johnny Depp’s daughter) will play the pop singer. The cast also includes Troye Sivan, Suzanna Son, and Steve Zissis as regulars and Melanie Liburd, Tunde Adebimpe, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Nico Hiraga, and Anne Heche as recurring characters.

The new trailer for the project kicks off with eerie electronic music, and segues into an adrenaline-pumping montage of sexy dance moves, drug snorting, and literal money shots, culminating in some ear-splitting guitar riffs. “The sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood,” reads the text overlay.

Watch this and tell us you aren’t intrigued:

The show was co-created with Sam Levinson, who you likely know as the man behind HBO’s teen drama Euphoria, which features another music star, Zendaya. If The Idol is anything like Euphoria, you know it’ll be a must-watch experience.

As for how soon we’ll get to feast our eyes on this series? We’re unclear. All we know is that it’s “coming soon.”
