Aside from the obligatory remake every now and then, Hollywood’s favorite thing is to reboot every franchise imaginable. In the current entertainment landscape that we live in, there seem to be handfuls of new movie reboots coming out every year. In the first three months of this year alone, we have already had multiple reboots that no one really asked for. Even though some may say that Hollywood is out of ideas, that’s not entirely true because their favorite idea is to tell the same stories every few decades. With that in mind, here are 10 upcoming movie reboots that we weren’t expecting (and would gladly forget).

10 Upcoming Movie Reboots 2022
Lightyear (2022)
Lightyear isn’t a remake of Toy Story per se, but rather a spinoff that tells the origin story for Buzz Lightyear. What makes this movie interesting amongst other reboots is the fact that is presented as a film within a film. Essentially, this is the movie that the character is Toy Story would watch. Fortunately for audiences, Chris Evans plays Buzz this time around so hopefully this will already be a Home Improvement for Pixar.

Salem’s Lot (2022)
The Stephen King-issance in film is beginning to wind down, but 2022 wouldn’t be complete without a King Reboot. Interestingly enough, the upcoming reboot of Salem’s Lot is not the first or second, but the third adaptation of the vampire novel after 1979 & 2004 tv movies. Salem’s Lot is currently set for theatrical release on September 9, so there’s only a few months left before we completely forget this remake ever existed.

Cheaper By the Dozen (2022)
The reboot of Cheaper By The Dozen may have just been released, but the non-existent marketing for the series would suggest otherwise. As with most Disney + properties, this reboot starring Zach Braff Gabrielle Union adds some modern twists to the story, but is ultimately cheap on laughs. Considering that this version of Cheaper by the Dozen is the second reboot of the 1948 novel, this is one of those reboots that we would gladly forget.

Father of the Bride
Another reboot of a remake, the HBO Max adaptation of The Father of the Bride is the third film adaptation of the 1949 book of the same name. Despite the critical and commercial success of both the 1950 and 1991 films, the new version of the story is sure to be exactly the same thing as before. Even though this reboot is taking a new direction by focusing on a Cuban-American family led by Andy Garcia, there’s something about this reboot that feels completely unnecessary. Hopefully, we’re wrong.

Firestarter (2022)
At this point, it seems that Blumhouse is on a mission to remake every horror movie in existence, so it only seems natural that Firestarter would be next in line. Another Stephen King adaptation, Firestarter is notable for not only wasting a young Drew Barrymore’s talents, but also for being notoriously hated by King himself. He famously called it “flavorless”, likening the movie to “cafeteria mashed potatoes”. While the same can be said for most of Zac Efron’s acting choices, at least Firestarter has a low bar to surpass.

Hellraiser (2022)
Horror remakes have been all the rage for the past few years, and 2022 is no different with the upcoming Hellraiser remake. The remake has been stuck in development hell for the better part of a decade at this point, so we’ll believe it when we actually see it. The new Hellraiser movie is set to premiere as a Hulu Original sometime later this year, with trans actress Jamie Clayton playing the role of Pinhead this time around. With such an interesting spin on the iconic horror villain, one hopes that the Hellraiser remake won’t be forgettable.

Matilda: The Musical (2022)
Most kids who grew up in the 90s have fond memories of Danny DeVito’s 1996 adaptation Matilda . So when a pseudo remake of a 2010 musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book was announced for Netflix, it didn’t seem like the best idea. Although Emma Thompson is attached to star as Miss Trunchbull, we can safely say that a Matilda Musical was not on our 2022 movie reboot bingo card.

Pinocchio (2022)
Ironically enough, there are not one, but two Pinnochio adaptations on the way this year. While Netflix is producing a stop-motion animated version of Pinocchio from Guillermo Del Toro, Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks are teeming up for a live-action remake of the the oft-told tale. Unfortunately, the latter is set to premiere exclusively on Disney+, so this will most likely get lost in the long line of Disney remakes that are currently incoming from the Mouse House.

The Santa Clause (TBD)
Speaking of unnecessary Disney+ reboots, we recently learned that The Santa Clause is the next in line for the limited series treatment. Much to the chagrin of liberals everywhere, Tim Allen is set to reprise his role as the titular Santa Clause in this reboot. It still may be awhile off, but this is one reboot taht we already looking to erase from our memory.

The Toxic Avenger (TBD)
The Toxic Avenger may be one of the more obscure superhero characters, but that hasn’t stopped Toxie from making his glorious return. Peter Dinklage is currently attached to star as the lead in the remake of the Toxic Avenger. If anything, seeing Dinklage continue one of the longest-running superhero franchises is sure to be an absolute delight.
