If you watched the Super Bowl (and there’s a pretty good chance you did), there’s a high likelihood that you saw the teaser trailer for Jordan Peele’s new movie ‘Nope’. Ever since it was announced the ‘Get Out’ and ‘Us’ director’s newest project has been shrouded in secrecy. And, even if you really paid attention to the trailer, the odds are you still have no idea what it’s about.
The trailer showed a ton of people looking up at the sky, some screaming, and one person flying off. The movie’s IMDB page summarizes it as “The residents of a lonely gulch in inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.”
So, what exactly is this new film about? Social media was abuzz with potential ideas. Since we’re not ones to shy away from controversy and what’s trending, we decided to try out hand at guessing whatever the hell this movie is about. Keep scrolling to see all of our guesses. Maybe one will actually be correct.
What is Nope About
-
A loss of gravity because of global warming.
The trailer showed a lot of people looking up, a cloud with things dangling from it, and even someone flying off into the sky. Maybe gravity just stopped working. That would be a real bummer.
-
An international super villain turns on a weather machine.
The weather seems to be going bananas in this trailer. Maybe a super villain finally invented a weather machine and he’s testing it on a rural California town.
-
A giant people-eating cloud.
Perhaps the simplest explanation is the best one. It’s a movie about a malevolent, omnipotent flying spaghetti monster-like cloud that decides it has a taste for people meat.
-
A documentary about neck stretches.
Maybe Jordan Peele is just tricking us with this trailer. ‘Nope’ is really a documentary about stretching with an emphasis on neck stretches. This is why it appears that so many people are looking up at the sky.
-
Aliens shaped like clouds.
This would be the least exciting, but most likely possibility. It’s aliens. And if they aren’t shaped like clouds, they have ships that look like clouds. It’s just a boring old alien invasion.
-
Horses finally get tired of being ridden and take over.
Everyone might be looking up. But we did see a lot of horse references. Maybe the horses got tired of us riding them and learned to fly and are now attacking everyone.
-
The world’s scariest kite-flying contest.
Maybe it’s just because we’ve never heard about it, but maybe this is a biopic about the world’s scariest kite-flying contest that must have happened at some point in a desert California town.
-
A live action, darker remake of ‘Up’.
As implausible as it sounds, this movie just might be a darker, live action remake of ‘Up’. There were a surprising amount of balloons in the trailer. Maybe Steven Yeun is playing Carl Fredricksen.
