Joe vs Carole

Mandatory Trailers: ‘Joe vs Carole’ Forces Us to Ponder ‘Who Asked For This Crap?’

If there’s one TV series that sums up the misery of the COVID-19 Pandemic, it would have to be Tiger King. While the Netflix documentary about Joe Exotic’s struggle to murder Carole Baskin was the talk of the town back in 2020, the success of the series was simply a result of everyone being stuck at home with nothing to watch. In this respect, Tiger King was a fad – a fad that doesn’t seem to want to go away.

Nearly two years later, we’re getting the fictionalized version of the story with the first trailer for Joe vs Carole. Based on the podcast Over My Dead Body, the Peacock series stars Kate McKinnon and John Cameron Mitchell as the titular duo. While these two are admittedly perfectly cast, the first trailer for Joe vs Carole naturally begs us to ponder the question — who asked for this crap?

As you can see from the trailer, Joe vs Carole looks to be a carbon copy of the story told in Tiger King. While there seems to be a focus on Carole Baskin’s story, Joe Exotic seems to be a supporting character in this one. It’s hard to say whether this series will add anything new to the story, but there’s something about this trailer that seems to confirm that it won’t.

If there’s one bright spot in the trailer for Joe vs Carole, it’s the great character actors that fill out the supporting cast. Kyle McLaughlin is perfectly cast as Carole’s husband Howard, whereas William Fichtner may have been born to play Rick Kirkham. Either way, there’s something about this series that already feels antiquated. Hopefully, Joe vs Carole can justify its existence when the limited series arrives on Peacock on March 3, 2022.
