Mandatory Music: Hear Red Hot Chili Peppers First New Music Teaser in 6 Years Now

Here’s a red hot alert from the Mandatory Music desk. LA’s favorite band of sock-wearing, head-banging, pharaoh-awakening funk rockers just put out a teaser for their first new song in six years and it has all the makings of a Red Hot Chili Peppers classic.

Their last studio album, 2016’s The Getaway, was a Danger Mouse-produced exploration of the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s softer side. But the new album promises to be a beast of a different color with guitar god John Frusciante returning to the big top.

Of course, the historically tumultuous relationship between Frusciante and company has left many fans anxious, but drummer (and Will Ferrell doppelganger) Chad Smith has assured us all is well.

“Look, John hasn’t been in our group in 10 years. That’s a long time. So of course it’s going to sound different, but it’s going to sound like the four of us because we do have this special chemistry together. It sounds like Red Hot Chili Peppers, but it’s different and new, and to me that’s great.”

The following 18-second snippet is all the proof we needed. It’s pure tone magic with the requisite hint of chorus coloring Frusciante’s trademark sound.

Feast your ears on this:

Despite the gang all pushing 60, they certainly remain a bunch of teases. Hopefully, they don’t make us wait too long for the full shebang. Tour dates up now.
