Mandatory Music: Father John Misty Gives Us ‘Funny Girl’ First Proper Single in 4 Years

Father John Misty is back at it, doing what he does best – wowing musicheads with his creative compositions. His latest release is “Funny Girl,” the first single from his forthcoming album Chloë and the Next 20th Century. It’s a soaring, orchestral ballad dedicated to what sounds like a very endearing – and famous – female that the singer seems to have a crush on.

In the brand-new music video, a jellyfish is seen floating through various ravaged American landscapes in sepia tone as the man colloquially known as Josh Tillman croons. The video was directed by Nicholas Ashe Bateman, who you might know as the genius behind The Green Knight’s visual effects.

The simple but mesmerizing tune was brought into being with the help of producer Jonathan Wilson and musician Drew Erickson. It combines Old Hollywood-esque instrumentation with undeniably modern lyrics, like “You knocked me out when you charmed the pants off Letterman / Oh I wish you’d flash that manic smile in my direction.”

Have a listen to this deliciously vintage-sounding tune, and be amazed:

Like what you hear? Well, we hate to break it to you, but the full album doesn’t drop until April 8 on Sub Pop. If you’re hoping to see Papa John in person, you better be online this Friday, Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. to nab tickets to his Feb. 25 Los Angeles Walt Disney Concert Hall show or his April 7 concert in London at The Barbican. ‘Til then, set this song on repeat and bask in the aural beauty.
