Being recognized in public is an occupational hazard for Hollywood stars. But what if, when you get excessive admiration and attention from fans, they think you’re a different celebrity altogether? That’s what’s been happening to Ryan Reynolds.
On a recent episode of the Dear Hank and John podcast, the Deadpool actor revealed, “There’s a pizza place in the East Village in New York that I’ve been going to for years. They believe I’m Ben Affleck.”
It’s almost inconceiveable, given that Reynolds and Affleck hardly look alike; the former is short, lighter-haired, and Canadian; the latter is tall, dark-haired, and grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
What’s funny, however, is how Reynolds deals with this unusual case of mistaken identity.
“I’ve never corrected them. I feel it would not go over well if I revealed it,” he said. Instead, he plays along, and acts normal – or as normal as one can act if they are pretending to be Ben Affleck. “They’ll ask how J.Lo is and I’m like, ‘Great, good.’ I get the pizza and off I go,” he said.
“What I think makes it so believable with them is that I look so mildly sort of put out by a celebrity getting asked again about my life and the movies and I sort of look like I … when I leave, I think they sort of think, ‘I don’t think Ben Affleck’s amused by us,’” he continued.
This isn’t the first time Reynolds has been mistaken for another celebrity. Apparently, people confuse him all the time with that other Ryan – Ryan Gosling. That mistake he cannot let slide by.
“The difference is easy to spot,” he’s been known to tell people. “Ryan Gosling has blond hair and Ryan Reynolds is a (bleep).”
We don’t know if we’d appreciate being misidentified all the time, even if it was as handsome, successful actors like Affleck and Gosling. It’s gotta grate on a guy after a while. Luckily for Reynolds, he can turn any humiliating scenario into a hilarious anecdote.
