Nic Cage has played some bizarre characters over the course of his acting career, but his latest role, revealed in the new The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent trailer, just might be his strangest.
Why? Because the actor playing himself…or rather, a spinoff of himself named Nick Cage.
“[‘Nick Cage’] is an invented version of Nic Cage,” the 58-year-old Oscar winner told Entertainment Weekly. “The character is feeling unfulfilled and contending with the rejection that can happen so often in the small town that is Hollywood. It’s not me.”
OK, fine, but Cage also plays a younger version of the invented version of himself. (Following?) That character’s name is Nicky, and he hearkens back to Cage’s Wild at Heart days.
“He’s got the lanky long hair; he’s just constantly riding Nick about his career choices,” Cage said in the EW interview. “I wasn’t too excited about the idea of playing myself, but when Tom sent me this script, Nicky reminded me a little of Jerry Lewis’ Buddy Love in The Nutty Professor. I always admired what he did with that movie. For me, Nicky steals the show.”
The plot involves Cage accepting $1 million to show up at the birthday party of a superfan and crime boss named Javi (Pedro Pascal). Javi is so obsessed with the Hollywood star, he even has a wax statue of him. (Awkward!)
Over the course of the B-day festivities, Javi insists that Cage recreate several of the most iconic movie characters and scenes from his oeuvre. Chaos, catastrophe, and hilarity ensue.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which is already being billed as “The Most Nicolas Cage Movie Ever,” drops April 22, 2022.
