John Krasinski Reveals Scandalous Pam and Jim Plotline on ‘The Office’ That He Refused to Shoot, And We’d Kill to See

We think we can all agree that The Office is as perfectly written as a sitcom could be. We wouldn’t change a thing about the various plotlines that sustained the hilarious series over nine seasons (except, maybe, the premature departure of Michael Scott).

We, along with viewers all over the world, were particularly smitten with the Pam and Jim storyline, which had us on the edge of our seats the entire time. But actor John Krasinski, who played Jim, recently revealed one of the show’s plotlines that none of us got to see – because he refused to do it.

Brian Baumgartner’s new book, Welcome to Dunder Mifflin: the Ultimate Oral History of The Office, discloses that there was a scandalous plot point that never made it into the Season 8 episode “After Hours.” It involved Jim cheating on Pam during her maternity leave with her replacement, Cathy Simms (Lindsey Broad).

But Krasinski wouldn’t let wholesome ol’ Jim go there. “That’s the only time I remember putting my foot down,” he said. He went straight to the series creator Greg Daniels about his misgivings. “I remember saying things that I never thought I’d say before, like, ‘I’m not going to shoot it.’”

The actor went on to say: “My feeling is there is a threshold with which you can push our audience. They are so dedicated. We have shown such great respect to them. But there’s a moment where if you push them too far, they’ll never come back. And I think that if you show Jim cheating, they’ll never come back.”

While it’s true we would have been heartbroken to see Jim cheat on Pam, the devil in us also would’ve enjoyed watching it all unfold. Maybe the cast can still shoot an alternative episode in which Jim cheats and Pam goes ballistic on him? We’d definitely tune in for that.
