Stadiums are notorious for ugly names, but the venue soon to be formerly known as the Staples Center is about to get a whole new moniker that is both unflattering and a little creepy. It’s going to be called Crypto.com Arena starting on Christmas Day.
For those who aren’t total sports nuts, the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles has been the home of the NBA’s Lakers and Clippers plus the NHL’s Kings and the WNBA’s Sparks for the past 22 years since it opened in 1999. But Crypto.com came calling with a whopping $700 million to slap its name on the stadium, and whomever manages the name game gladly took the funds.
Naming a stadium after a website seems a little iffy to us given how fast the internet evolves. Crypto.com, a cryptocurrency platform and exchange based in Singapore, has only been around since 2016. Apparently it’s flush with cash, though, because it’s been teaming up with sporting heavyweights like Formula One, the UFC, Italy’s Serie A, Paris St-Germain, the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens, and the Philadelphia 76ers.
We wish stadiums were named like hurricanes (no, not the team). That’d add personality and be a lot more fun.
