Mandatory Trailers: Jared Leto Looks Promising in New ‘Morbius’ Trailer, But Should He Go Good or Stay Bad?

As the third installment in Sony’s Marvel Universe—which only kind of involves Spider-Man—Morbius will follow Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), a scientist suffering from a rare blood disease who stumbles across vampirism, which not only cures his disease but grants him superhuman abilities without any of your typical vampire pitfalls. Still, he thirsts for blood. In addition to Leto, the film stars Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. Who would’ve thought Doctor Who and Roman Pearce would be in a movie together? 

The first Morbius trailer dropped over a year ago. That being said, we’d since forgotten about that early 00s’-looking comic book/vampire film starring Leto. Tuesday, the second trailer dropped and, to be fair, it looks promising. Check it out below: 

Following Tom Hardy’s Venom, Leto’s Morbius marks the second Spider-Man villain to get the hero treatment.  Imagine the pitch at Sony: “So, we can’t use Spider-Man because he’s busy slinging webs in the MCU, we’ve already done Venom, and the Sinister Six is in the works…who else we got?” 

“How about The Spot?” 

“You mean the Human Dalmatian…let’s just do Roy Thomas and Gil Kane’s Morbius the Living Vampire. And while you’re at it, throw in a bunch of Easter Eggs linking it to every Spider-Man movie ever made.” 

Morbius will also see Michael Keaton reprise his role of Adrian Toomes/Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming. On top of that, the latest trailer shows off an Oscorp building featuring the same company logo seen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and teases Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man via some graffiti. What do all these “eenie meenie miney mo” multiverse nods mean? Probably nothing. Sony is just hyping up Spider-Man: No Way Home. Morbius was originally supposed to release in 2020 before suffering multiple delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Now, Morbius is currently set to hit theaters on January 28, 2022.
