If you’re a child of the ’80s or ’90s, there was no bigger video game franchise than Super Mario Bros. From 1985 to 1990 Nintendo dropped Super Mario Bros. 1 through 3. While those aren’t even close to the only games to feature plumber brother Mario and Luigi, there’s no disputing the importance of this trilogy. While these three games were Nintendo Entertainment System games, 1990’s Super Mario World, released on Super Nintendo, really changed the game with hyped-up graphics and easier gameplay. Its popularity also led to the release of a feature film starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as the titular plumbers. It was a box office bomb and an utterly bizarre fever dream that many of us wish we could forget. Luckily, now we can.
That’s because it was recently announced that a new Super Mario Bros. movie would be dropping. This one is starring Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser. Luckily this will be an animated film as nobody wants to see a live-action reboot. But it does make us think about other video games we’d love to see adapted for the big screen. Keep scrolling to see our dream picks.
Video Game Movies
-
'Grand Theft Auto'
This one might be a bit tricky as it’s a pretty immersive series. But, an interesting story surrounding a character forced to commit crimes for a criminal overlord without getting captured by police could be pretty cool.
-
'Battletoads'
Many of us played Battletoads when we were kids. It was a frustratingly difficult game. But we always enjoyed the toad-based characters. An animated feature could still work today.
-
'Castlevania'
We know there’s a Netflix animated series about Trevor Belmont and his battles with vampires throughout Eastern Europe. But wouldn’t a live action movie be even better?
-
'Diablo'
First released in 1997, this PC game featured the war between humans living in a place called the Sanctuary and demons and an evil presence known as Diablo attempting to destroy them. This battle of good versus evil could make for a great series of films.
-
'The Legend of Zelda'
Why there’s never been a Legend of Zelda movie, we’ll never know. If done right, this could be an epic hero’s journey that has more than enough content to be a series of films.
-
'Kid Icarus'
If you’re not a child of the '80s, you might not know about the magic that was Kid Icarus. A film featuring the child Icarus while he battled mythical creatures while he searches for the three sacred treasures to save his world could be awesome and nostalgic.
-
'Red Dead Redemption'
A new video game series, Red Dead Redemption is ripe for big screen adaptation. Gunslingers, bandits, excitement. Everyone loves a good western, right?
-
'Wolfenstein'
One of the OG first person shooters, Wolfenstein centered around an allied soldier fighting Nazis and various supernatural and occult creatures created by them. A well-written movie featuring this plot would be epic.
