Thirty years ago, Mario made his first video game appearance, and magic mushrooms, blue-collar work, and mischievous anthropomorphic turtles have permeated pop culture ever since. Now, Nintendo’s surprise announcement that Chris Pratt will voice the Italian plumber in Illumination’s upcoming animated Super Mario Bros: The Movie (release date: December 21, 2022) had everyone talking on Twitter. Pratt will lead an A-list cast including Charlie Day as the accommodating Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Jack Black as Bowser.
The fact that none of these cast members are Italian, and it’s unclear whether they will voice their roles with an Italian accent, has spawned a plethora of reactions worthy of the phrase, “mama mia!” Those who remember 1993’s live-action abomination, Super Mario Bros, are optimistic. Others are simply not okay with it. Regardless, it’s all rather silly and the perfect kind of melodrama to ridicule—which is the whole point of Twitter these days: laughter. Here are some of the funniest tweets reacting to Chris Pratt’s Super Mario Bros. movie.
