Nicole Richie recently turned 40, and her birthday party was lit – literally. The reality TV star was blowing out the candles on her birthday cake when her hair suddenly caught fire. Of course this was all captured on video, which she posted on Instagram.

In the vid, Richie leans over a custom cake featuring a photo of herself as a little girl. Just as she’s about to finish blowing out all the candles, her curly blonde hair falls into the flames and catches on fire. A friend reaches over her left shoulder to extinguish the first flame, but then the right side alights as well. It takes Richie a second to realize she’s burning up – and when she does, she screams and paws at her singed locks.
“Well… so far 40 is [flame emoji],” Richie captioned the post.
Celebs took to the comments to chime in on the hilarious video, which has over 2 million views.
“Omg” wrote Zooey Deschanel.
“That’s hot,” teased Joel Madden.
“stay lit,” said Benjamin Madden.
“Happy birthday, baby! Welcome to your 40’s, where the party really gets started. Xx,” Chelsea Handler wrote.
We hope Richie’s hair is OK. If not, maybe she’ll start off this new decade with a dramatic new ‘do. One thing’s for sure: this is a birthday she’ll never forget.
