Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial (feature) debut is an adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s (My Brilliant Friend) novel of the same name following a college professor who must reconcile her unsettling past after becoming obsessed with a woman and her young daughter while on vacation in Italy. The talented cast includes the unstoppable Olivia Olman, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, Jessie Buckley, Ed Harris, and Paul Mescal.

8. 'The Power of the Dog' - November 17
Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons star as two brothers who own the biggest ranch in the Montana valley and go to war after one of them secretly gets married. It also stars Kirsten Dunst, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Thomasin McKenzie, Genevieve Lemon, Keith Carradine, and Frances Conroy.

7. 'The Guilty' - October 1
Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) and written by True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, The Guilty takes place throughout a single morning, following 911 dispatcher Joe Bayler (Jake Gyllenhaal) as he tries to help a caller who’s in a serious pickle...or so it seems. In addition to Gyllenhaal, the cast includes Peter Sarsgaard, Riley Keough, Paul Dano, Ethan Hawke, and Bill Burr.

6. 'Tick, Tick... Boom!' - November 10
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut follows an aspiring theater composer who writes the next great American musical while waiting tables in New York City circa 1990. It stars Andrew Garfield (who will also be slinging webs this year) Alexandra Shipp, Vanessa Hudgens, Bradley Whitford, and Judith Light.

5. 'The Harder They Fall' - October 6
This Jay-Z-produced Western follows outlaw Nat Love (Jonathan Majors), who discovers that his enemy, Rufus Buck (Idris Elba), has been released from prison. So, he reunites his gang to track Rufus down and seek revenge. the movie also stars Regina King, Zazie Beetz, Delroy Lindo, and LaKeith Stanfield.

4. 'Army of the Thieves' - October 29
Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead was a huge success for Netflix earlier this year. Now, a plethora “Dead” projects are on the horizon. First up is Matthias Schweighöfer’s prequel Army of Thieves with Schweighöfer reprising his role as safe-cracker Ludwig Dieter, who is recruited to assist in a handful of impossible heists across Europe. The cast also includes Nathalie Emmanuel, Guz Khan, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Jonathan Cohen, Noemie Nakai, and Peter Simonischek.

2. 'Escape from Spiderhead' - TBA 2021
Based on George Saunders’ short story of the same name, this science fiction film takes place in the near future and follows Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller as two convicts who must confront their past as inmates in a facility where they’re experimented on with emotion-altering drugs. While a release date has yet to be announced, Escape from Spiderhead is still expected to become available on Netflix this year.

From the guy who’s really good at making things that scare the shit out of us funny, Adam McKay comes the story of two astronomers who must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy Earth. This one is worth seeing just for its cast; including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Tyler Perry, Timothée Chalamet, Cate Blanchette, and Meryl Streep.
