The Post, Steven Spielberg’s 30th big screen directorial effort, (not including the segment of 1985’s The Twilight Zone: The Movie that he directed), like many of his films, is based on a true story; The Pentagon Papers.
Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks co-star in the film as Katherine Graham and Ben Bradlee, respectively. Graham was the publisher of The Washington Post, (and the country’s first female newspaper publisher), and Bradlee was the paper’s editor.
The Post tells of the cover-up that spanned four U.S. Presidents and that pushed the country’s first female newspaper publisher and a hard-driving editor to join an unprecedented battle between journalist and government.
Why is the film relevant today?
Spielberg tells us, “the press needs to continue to be a free press and the truth has to be the truth, an objective truth. It can’t be a truth with an agenda.”
Next up for Spielberg is the Warner Bros. film Ready Player One, in theaters March 30, 2018. A fifth Indiana Jones is in the works, as well, for release in 2020.
