Isle of Dogs | 23 March 2018
Wes Anderson is a unique filmmaker that makes unique films. And none of his movies look more different than the Isle of Dogs as it is a stop-motion animated film about dogs. An island of them. So even if it doesn’t become one of the best new movies, it will surely become one of the most popular movies of the year as it is animation and dogs combined. The movie has a wide cast, as is usually the case with animated movies. Since it is such a unique adventure film, we have high hopes for both critic and commercial success of this Anderson film. It seems that it will be another of his movies that are cute, but also enjoyable by men.
12 Strong | 19 January 2018
The movie that didn’t manage to solve it’s name problem even with the second, more generic name, which is still better than the original “Horse Soldiers”. Bad names can’t diminish the potential of this war movie, as it has a relevant, modern story of special forces in Afghanistan post 9/11 boosted by strong names attached. Chris Hemsworth stars, accompanied by Michael Peña, Michael Shannon, and Taylor Sheridan, who in particular made a name for himself as a serious, realistic filmmaker in recent times. We need a modern war movie to be one of the best new movies as the genre is deficient even though wars are not.
The Commuter | 12 January 2018
The movie that truly has the potential to a sleeper hit as it has an interesting premise, and if the mystery is good enough, the word-to-mouth can rake in a lot of sold movie tickets. Additionally, the movie has crowd-favorite Liam Neeson, but what sold us is the plot of a businessman having his normal day interrupted by a peculiar woman giving him weird tasks on the commuter train. Somewhat reminiscent of Source Code, although not sci-fi, The Commuter should also be applauded on a clever movie poster, which we see less and less of. The reasons for why this movie could potentially be one of the best movies of the year are here, and we don’t have to wait for too long to see if it delivers.
A Wrinkle in Time | 9 March 2018
A darker magical Disney adventure is something we didn’t know we need as grown men, but after seeing the trailer for Ava DuVernay’s movie, we are strongly anticipating 9th of March. Hoping that this won’t just be one of the best new movies, but a cornerstone Disney film for a generation that has been deprived of them. Recently faultless Chris Pine stars in the movie with numerous other A-list celebrities, although, like any great Disney movie, it puts the child actors in the main seat. As three kids have to find a scientist in a very abstract, peculiar adventure that is transferred from a novel by Madeleine L’Engle.
If you can’t wait for the best new movies in 2018, the rest of 2017 has some possible hidden gems for you to check out.
