Most movie buffs have their calendars mapped out til the end of the year with some notable releases like It, Blade Runner 2049, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi coming our way. But we can never have enough of good movies, even though people tend to think that every movie year has a slow start. With these seven best new movies coming our way in early 2018 we hope to get rid of that misconception as they sure do look promising.
There is a lot of uninspiring sequels, rehashes of the same things we’ve been seen for some time now, and cheap-looking movies with some potential. But hopefully, these interesting films will deliver on their potential and become some of the best new movies in recent times.
Best New Movies Coming in the First Quarter of 2018
Annihilation | 23 February 2018
Coming from the director of Ex Machina (2014) Alex Garland, the man who is also the writer behind some of the most intriguing and meaningful cult-classic like Never Let Me Go (2010), The Beach (2000), and 28 Days Later (2002). It’s another sci-fi mystery, and once again for Garland, the movie has a unique premise of a biologist going on a secret mission where laws of nature don’t apply. Natalie Portman has the starring role, and the help of Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. We can expect another visually unique film, strong performances, and an immersion in a fantasy-like world.
Red Sparrow | 2 March 2018
While we are over saturated with the movies in a couple of repetitive genres, we haven’t had a great political thriller on our hands for quite some while. Red Sparrow, the story about a female Russian intelligence agent who is trained to use her good looks in the espionage game, looks highly promising. The trailer gives a very specific, dark vibe to the story, and it stars Jennifer Lawrence that looks completely immersed into the troubled, challenged character. It has the chance to be one of the best new movies, and also an instrument for Lawrence to get more high awards.
Ready Player One | 30 March 2018
Steven Spielberg is back! Sure, the iconic director is in more than a slump with his last great movie arguably being Munich (2005), but the adventure sci-fi looks like just what he needs to get back on top. Set inside a virtual reality with all possible fictional characters being played by the characters, it’s no wonder it has the nerd culture on alert. One of the most promising young actors Tye Sheridan will have the main role, although CGI will do most of the work. Ready Player One will be seen as potentially one of the best new movies unless first viewings state that it’s more style over substance or cameos/easter eggs over substance, for that matter.
