Tom Petty Fittingly Closed Out His Final Show By Performing ‘American Girl’ One Last Time

Like every red-blooded American, we were pretty bummed by news of the death of legendary rocker Tom Petty. Well, eventually, at least. We actually spent most of last night constantly checking to see if he’d officially passed on since early conflicting reports made it a little unclear. Now that it’s been deemed official, we wanted to pay our respects. So rather than launch into a long spiel about everything he accomplished in his long and fruitful career on and off the stage — he literally just concluded a 53-date 40th anniversary tour with The Heartbreakers last week — we figured it’d be best to keep it low key.

On September 25th at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Petty ended his final performance with a song many probably don’t realize was a sleeper hit. That’s because it wound up being the track he’s most synonymous with today. So much so, in fact, that we won’t even bother with more of an introduction than that.
