‘Wonder Woman 2’ Will Arrive on December 13, 2019

People disagree about a lot of things, but one thing we can pretty much all agree on is that Wonder Woman was a rousing success. Patty Jenkins’ exciting, inspirational superhero epic became the highest grossing film of the summer, domestically, reinvigorated the scattershot DC Extended Universe franchise and earned raves across the board. A sequel was inevitable. Frankly, we’re surprised it took nearly two months to become official.

But official it became this week, when Warner Bros. announced that Wonder Woman 2 (probably a temporary title) was heading to theaters on December 13, 2019 (via Coming Soon). Although a few major releases are already scheduled around that time period, including Frozen 2 and Masters of the Universe, the sequel to Wonder Woman is the only film staking out that particular weekend. And given how successful the first movie was, you can expect all the other major releases to stay the hell out of Wonder Woman 2‘s way.

The big question mark, however, is whether Patty Jenkins is going to return to direct the sequel. It was Jenkins who imbued Wonder Woman with its thematically rich, engrossingly sincere, genuinely funny and genuinely tragic elements. That’s a tough mixture to pull off correctly, and if you need further proof, just look at how few other superhero directors – even the good ones – have struggled to successfully balance those elements.

Wonder Woman 2 is just one of many DCEU movies that are currently on the horizon. Up next is Justice League (November 17, 2017), followed by Aquaman (December 21, 2018). Other films on the horizon include ShazamSuicide Squad 2The FlashGreen Lantern CorpsBatgirlJustice League Dark, Gotham City Sirens and The Batman.
