Marvel Studios was ready to drop some bombshells about their upcoming movies, some of which aren’t coming out for a couple of years, but that doesn’t mean they were overlooking their next big superhero epic. Thor: Ragnarok comes out in about 3 1/2 months, and the studio revealed the latest trailer for Taika Waititi’s colorful, electric new sequel.
Notably, the trailer doesn’t reveal too much in the way of plot. Mostly we’re seeing Thor’s various bromances with his brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), as well as his fellow Avenger, the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). They’ve all found themselves on a strange planet while Hela (Cate Blanchett) conquers Asgard with her minion Skurge (Karl Urban), and it looks like they’ll have to fight one war just to get back to the other.
Let’s be honest, Thor is one of the weirder superhero franchises out there. It’s already about Norse gods who are also aliens (or vice-versa, or both, depending on how you look at it), combining classical mythology with sci-fi extravagance. The previous films have highlighted Thor’s experiences on Earth, but here we seem to be focused on his outlandish element, exploring new worlds and punching everybody who lives there.
And it looks pretty neat. The costumes and production design are distinctive, the humor seems based on character and overall the imagery looks bizarre and stunning. So long as the movie makes more sense than Thor: The Dark World, and has a better villain than Thor: The Dark World, and is easier to look at than Thor: The Dark World, and has more of a reason to exist than Thor: The Dark World, and makes us all forget that Thor: The Dark World even happened, we’ll be just fine.
Thor: Ragnarok arrives in theaters on November 3, 2017.
