Comic-Con 2017 | The ‘Pacific Rim Uprising’ Recruitment Video is Here!

Guillermo Del Toro’s giant robots vs. giant monsters movie Pacific Rim was not the blockbuster the fans wanted it to be, but strong overseas business and a steady stream of cult-like appreciation has earned the franchise a second shot at the box office, this time under the direction of Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil).

It’s still a nerve-wracking proposition for fans of the original film. Pacific Rim was ushered into existence by a true auteur filmmaker, and created by Travis Beacham, a screenwriter who laid the groundwork for multiple sequels. The new film, Pacific Rim Uprising, comes from new filmmakers who appear to be moving in a different direction, with a different cast of characters, in a story that now takes place ten years after the events of the previous movies.

Here’s the synopsis, via the film’s newly debuted website GoJaeger.com:

“It’s been ten years since The Battle of the Breach and the oceans are still, but restless. Vindicated by the victory at the Breach, the Jaeger program has evolved into the most powerful global defense force in human history. The PPDC now calls upon the best and brightest to rise up and become the next generation of heroes. When the Kaiju threat returns, we will be ready.”

The first “recruitment video” for Pacific Rim Uprising premiered at Comic-Con 2017 today, and it’s the definition of a tease, offering only glimpses of what’s to come. The clip’s propagandistic qualities evoke pleasant memories of Paul Verhoeven’s cult classic Starship Troopers. Let’s hope Pacific Rim Uprising lives up to these big budget sci-fi gold standards, and that it finds a bigger audience than Starship Troopers or the original Pacific Rim did.

Watch the “recruitment video” above, then scroll down to see the latest designs for the giant robots – a.k.a. “Jaegers” – that will be doing battle with giant beasts in Pacific Rim Uprising, heading to theaters on February 23, 2018.

[Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this article referred to the latest clip as a “teaser” instead of a “recruitment video,” which is apparently what it is.]

[Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this article referred to Pacific Rim Uprising as Pacific Rim: Uprising. That’s usually how colons work, but apparently not this time. We apologize for the mistake.]
