For the first time in three years, HBO’s Game of Thrones will not walk away with the top prize in television. Because the new season doesn’t premiere until this Sunday, GoT wasn’t eligible to be nominated for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards. But HBO didn’t walk away empty handed.
HBO led all networks with 110 nominations for this year’s Emmy Awards, including 22 for freshman sci-fi drama, Westworld, including best drama and lead actor in a drama for Anthony Hopkins. Only Saturday Night Live managed to match Westworld‘s total nominations, including a guest actress nod for Melissa McCarthy and a supporting actor nomination for Alec Baldwin’s portrayal of Donald Trump.
Despite HBO’s success, its most critically acclaimed drama, The Leftovers, was completely snubbed in the major categories. The Leftovers star Carrie Coon did walk away with a leading actress in a limited series nomination for Fargo, but she had been expected to compete in the leading actress in a drama category. FX’s The Americans was also snubbed for best drama, but both stars, Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell were nominated as lead actor and actress in a drama, respectively.

With Game of Thrones out of the way, this year’s top drama will be wide open. Alongside Westworld, Stranger Things, This is Us, The Crown, and The Handmaid’s Tale are also first time nominees for best drama. House of Cards and Better Call Saul are the only returning dramas to also be nominated for this award. In comedy, Veep will probably win again. But just to keep things interesting, the academy also nominated Atlanta, Black-ish, Master of None, Modern Family, Silicon Valley, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
