Rey & BB-8 Star in First ‘Star Wars: Forces of Destiny’ Short

Star Wars Rebels may be coming to an end after the upcoming fourth season, but Lucasfilm is far from finished with animation. During the Fourth of July weekend, Lucasfilm and its parent company, Disney, released the first installment from its series of animated shorts, Star Wars: Forces of Destiny.

Unlike previous Star Wars animated adaptations, Forces of Destiny doesn’t stick to one era or even a set group of characters. Instead, it throws the spotlight on the heroines of the Star Wars universe, including Princess Leia, Padmé Amidala, Jyn  Erso, Maz Kanata, and even characters who originated in animation like  Sabine Wren, Hera Syndulla, and Ahsoka Tano.

For the first short, Daisy Ridley reprised her role as Rey from The Force Awakens for a tale that takes place during that movie. “Sands of Jakku” picks up shortly after Rey meets BB-8 for the first time and offers him shelter. But they run into some trouble on the way back to her makeshift home, and Rey will be forced to step up in order  to save them both from a creature in the sand.

Ridley will also be back for additional shorts, and she won’t be the only actress reprising her role for Forces of Destiny. Felicity Jones, Lupita Nyong’o, Vanessa Marshall, Tiya Sircar, and Ashley Eckstein. There’s also a trailer that shows off a few scenes from the upcoming shorts.
