The penultimate season of Game of Thrones is coming to HBO in just a few weeks, and the endgame for the series is fast approaching. Unfortunately, there will only be seven episodes this season, which is down from the normal ten episodes. Next season may have as few as six episodes to wrap up the entire series. That may not seem ideal, but the creative team may have a solution for the reduced number of episodes.
Via Vanity Fair, GoT‘s sound designer Paula Fairfield was a guest at Con of Thrones last weekend, and she indicated that the producers of the series are considering feature length episodes for the eighth season. This isn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility, since the season 7 finale is already slated to be 82 minutes. BBC’s Sherlock has also done multiple seasons with feature length episodes, and it seems like a good compromise to make up for the shorter season.
That said, it’s far from confirmed at this point, as showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff have reportedly not yet finished writing the eighth and final season. So, plans could still change.

Back when the series’ conclusion was still a few years off, George R.R. Martin floated the idea of wrapping up the show on the big screen as potentially more than one movie. However, HBO was reportedly not in favor of that idea. Even if Benioff and Weiss don’t opt for feature length episodes, there is also a chance that Game of Thrones may skip 2018 entirely. That’s never happened in any of the previous seasons, but the final chapter will likely be a massive undertaking. It’s better if the creative team takes their time rather than just rushing it out the door.
