Game of Thrones’ Hodor Becomes a KFC Pitchman

Unless you’re Jon Snow, you only live once on Game of Thrones. But it doesn’t matter if you go, it’s how you go. And few characters had a more heartrending sendoff than Kristian Nairn’s Hodor. It’s amazing that the show and George R.R. Martin’s novels managed to hide Hodor’s fate in his name, while giving new meaning to the phrase “Hold the Door.” It was one of the most memorable exits in the entire series, and now, Hodor lives again! Kind of.

Via Entertainment Weekly, Nairn has signed on to appear in a new KFC ad an employee of the fast food chain that just happens to be named “Kristian.” But it’s no coincidence when he channels Hodor as the impatient lunch crowd demands “chicken and fries” over and over again. And we can’t blame Bran this time when Kristian’s mind breaks and he slurs the words into a new combination.

As popular as it is, it does seem kind of odd to make this ad into a Game of Thrones inspired piece that only fans of that series will understand. Even the music in this commercial tries to copy Ramin Djawadi’s signature themes. It’s also a very roundabout way to introduce KFC’s Ricebox. But Hodor probably would have liked it. Hodor had neither lovers nor children, but he was a great friend and he loved food.

Although we don’t expect Nairn to have a large role in Game of Thrones season 7, the show’s producers probably aren’t done with him. Remember, we never saw Hodor’s body, but it’s a pretty safe bet that he isn’t eating chicken out of a bucket anymore. Undead wright Hodor is too perfect to pass up on. But we’ll find out for sure when GoT returns for a new season on July 16.
