Can you imagine Game of Thrones without its signature theme song? And would several of the series’ most important moments have been the same without the music playing in the background. Ramin Djawadi’s music has become so synonymous with the series that he even went on a Game of Thrones music tour earlier this year. Now, with the new season coming out in just a few weeks, HBO is turning the spotlight over to Djawadi in a new production video.
Within the “A Story in Score” video, Djawadi explains how and when he decided that he wanted to be a musician, and he specifically mentions the film that inspired him to create such memorable themes on the series. Djawadi also demonstrates his command over several instruments while explaining how he blends different sounds together for the music of the Seven Kingdoms and the nations across the Narrow Sea.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Djawadi’s score is its ability to both lead the audience and to misdirect them. Even Djawadi notes that as one of his favorite things to do. With just a few notes, he can create an overriding sensation of doom. And yet even in a world of dragons and despair, he can still create music that features moments of hope and inspiration. We’re looking forward to hearing his latest themes in the new season.
Game of Thrones season 7 will premiere on Sunday, July 16.
