Reginald Hudlin Will Direct the ‘Shadowman’ Movie

In case you were wondering: no, we will never run out of superhero movies. Marvel and DC have a lot of characters left to turn into feature-length blockbusters, the popular Image characters are still largely untouched, and we haven’t had ANY superhero movies based on the Valiant Comics superheroes.

But that last part is about to change. Reginald Hudlin has been hired to direct Shadowman, an adaptation of a Valiant Comics series about a musician in New Orleans who inherits supernatural powers and defends mankind from demons who plan to invade the world. The character was created 25 years ago, and has since gone on to star in several comic book series and two video games.

Reginald Hudlin and Salem showrunner Adam Simon will revise a draft of Shadowman previously written by J. Michael Straczinski (Sense8), according to Hollywood Reporter. The filmmaker spent the majority of his movie career making comedies – including House PartyBoomerang and The Ladies Man – before taking a long hiatus from the directing feature films. Reginald Hudlin’s first movie in the director’s chair after 15 years is the upcoming legal thriller Marshall, starring Chadwick Boseman (Get On Up) as future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, as he tackles one of his earliest cases.

Reginald Hudlin kept himself VERY busy during his break from feature film directing, working as the President of Black Entertainment Television (BET) for three years, directing television shows like The MiddleModern Family and Bones, and writing an acclaimed Black Panther comic book series that revitalized the character’s status in the Marvel Comics universe. Hudlin also earned an Oscar nomination from producing Quentin Tarantino’s acclaimed western Django Unchained.

Shadowman is being developed by Valiant Comics, and will be pitched to various studios after that process is complete. Valiant is also developing a feature film based on Archer & Armstrong, under director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and screenwriter Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean).
