Spider-Man is (Obviously) Getting His Own Movie Trilogy (Again)

Wealth and fame, it has been said (or sung), Spider-Man has ignored. Action was allegedly his reward.

But that was then, this is now, and there’s no particular reason why Spider-Man can’t have both. Tom Holland, the star of the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, has announced that plans are already underway for a new Spider-Man movie trilogy, which would not only deliver the action but also (presumably) make lots of money and make all the actors involved into major movie stars.

“There is what we call the ‘arc’ of the character, Tom Holland explained to AlloCiné in his latest interview. “There is still a lot of room for Peter Parker, and Spider-Man especially, to grow in the next two movies, you know? He’s definitely not the finished article by the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming and I really look forward to exploring the different ways he can grow up and go through puberty, I guess. And yeah, it’s going to be an exciting couple movies.”

“There will be Spider-Man 2 and 3, it won’t be Homecoming 2 and 3,Tom Holland clarified. When asked if that was officially a “scoop,” because the third film had not officially been announced yet, Holland added, “Yeah, well now you know! Now you know. Sorry, Marvel. Whoops! That’s out!”

Let’s get one thing clear: it’s not news when the makers of a new superhero movie already have plans for a sequel. You weren’t going to find any executive at Marvel Studios or Sony who would tell you they only had ideas for one Spider-Man movie, or that they think the next film will say everything they have to say with the character, or that producing a bunch of lucrative sequels would be an enormous mistake.

But there has been a lot of skepticism about the future of Spider-Man lately. Sony has the cinematic rights to the beloved superhero, but after the disappointing reception of The Amazing Spider-Man and (particularly) The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the studio agreed to let Marvel Studios reboot the character within their pre-existing Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

That deal has allowed Spider-Man to appear in Captain America: Civil WarSpider-Man: Homecoming and the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, but Sony hasn’t stepped out of the creative process altogether. They also have an animated Spider-Man movie coming out on December 14, 2018 featuring the Miles Morales version of the character, as well as upcoming feature films featuring side characters from the so-called “Spiderverse”, including Venom and a team-up between Silver Sable and Black Cat.

In other words, Sony still has their hands on the wheel and there’s no reason to assume that Spider-Man will stay in the MCU forever. But it sounds like, according to the star of the new series, he’ll be sticking around for at least a few more years. For fans of this rebooted version of Spider-Man, that’s extremely good news.

Spider-Man: Homecoming comes out on July 7, 2017.
