In the early days of HBO’s original programming, the adaptation of the EC horror comic book series, Tales From the Crypt, helped put the premium network on the map. More recently, TNT had an ambitious plan to reboot the anthology series with filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, who is enjoying a career revival of his own following the success of Split. Although a teaser trailer for the new series was released earlier this year, it now appears to have been killed.
While speaking with Deadline, TNT and TBS president Kevin Reilly revealed that the new Tales From the Crypt wasn’t doomed by a supernatural twist or a curse. Instead it was the legal drama that essentially made TNT to pass on one of its most anticipated new shows. “That one got really caught up in a complete legal mess unfortunately with a very complicated underlying rights structure,” explained Reilly. “We lost so much time, so I said, ‘Look, I’m not waiting around four years for this thing.'”
Reilly indicated that TNT may eventually come back around for another shot at the series. But for now, it’s absolutely not happening.

There is some good news out of this. Apparently TNT is teaming up with Ridley Scott for a programming block of sci-fi shows. Reilly added that “it could be a series order. When you got Ridley, there are projects he is potentially interested in getting directly involved.”
