Have you ever thought about what you want to do with your life when you reach retirement age? Maybe you aspire to own a house your grandchildren can visit. Perhaps you long for the freedom to sail around the world on a boat. There are so many things you can do that can be a relaxing way to spend your final years.
But if you’re anything like Verdun Hayes, you’re not about relaxation. Instead, you’re into keeping that heart rate up and giving the middle finger to society when it says you’re too old.
World Skydiving Record Set By 101-Year-Old Man
Hayes is a World War II veteran, great grandfather, and all-around badass. He can now add world-record holder to that list, because he became the oldest person in history to go tandem skydiving.
On Sunday, Hayes hopped onto a plane that climbed to 15,000 feet and jumped into the skies over the United Kingdom. He did so at the tender age of 101 years and 38 days old. Better yet, he did it in front of four generations of his family, which basically guarantees Christmas dinners will always include conversation about how grandpa was the old man skydiving and deleting the word “fear” from his vocabulary.
When (if?) I reach 101 years old, the last thing I can imagine doing is jumping out of a plane. I’ll probably stick to harmless activities, like writing on the internet about scientists cloning humans in plastic bags.
