Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)
Another film that caught the attention of the audience and the critics when it came out, and inexplicably slip from our memories. Like in a lot of these films, crime and mystery are sprinkled with brilliant comedy delivered by Val Kilmer, Robert Downey Jr., and Michelle Monaghan. Written and directed by the guy who wrote Lethal Weapon movies – Shane Black, KKBB is an unjustifiably forgotten gem.
The Boondock Saints (1999)
A cult movie which got its status thanks to the fact that there is nothing truly like in the movie universe. Yes, it’s another crime movie brimming with dark humor, but it’s also one of the better action movies of the decade, and that’s saying something in the ’90s. The unexpectedness of the humor is what puts “The Saints” in the bracket of the best movies with twisted comedy.
James McAvoy is brilliant in the role of a corrupt, junkie bastard of a cop, and it’s surprising that his performance and this unique film didn’t arise more attention. A comedy first, but definitely not just it, and surely not by a long margin as there are dark drama and crime in the story as well. The vibe of the movie can be summarized in this one, brilliant gif, also an unfulfilled fantasy of every dark humor lover.
The Nice Guys (2016)
A breath of fresh air to the movie industry of recent years brought in by the violent, anti-political correctness sense of humor of Shane Black. Writer/director doesn’t shy away from anything, like making children say gruesome murder/prostitution punchlines, but the movie stands on the shoulders of Russel Crowe and especially Ryan Gossling who is impeccable with his timing and delivery.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
One of the ’90s biggest pictures and it saddens us deeply that a movie with this type of rhetoric would probably be received with PC-sharpened knives today. Highly rated Quentin Tarantino juggernaut was done with uniquely vivid, yet believable characters having signature dialogue that would make a grandma roll her eyes in disgust.
