Enter the Nightmare-Fueled World of the ‘Tom and Jerry’ Willy Wonka Movie

Straight-to-video movies are often overlooked in favor of bigger budgeted and, let’s be honest, typically better theatrical releases. But every once in a while a straight-to-video film comes out that gets everybody talking, whether or not it’s for what we might consider the “right” reasons.

Which brings us to a little film called Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, a children’s film that put about as much thought into its title as those contemporary adult movies with titles like This Ain’t Fast and Furious XXX or Twilight The Porno.

Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory plunks the cartoon cat and mouse that everybody remembers but nobody ever watches anymore smack dab into the middle of the original Willy Wonka movie. The characters are specifically designed to look like the original stars of Mel Stuart’s beloved family classic, the musical numbers are the same, but once Tom and Jerry get to the chocolate factory they get their own tour courtesy of the mouse version of an Oompa Loompa.

Knock-off movies are commonplace in the world of straight-to-video entertainment but Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory doesn’t even technically qualify as a knock-off. It’s being released by Warner Bros. Animation, a division of the company that owns the home video rights to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

That means that as cheap as this looks, as disrespectful as this looks, and even as bad as this looks… it’s an OFFICIAL Willy Wonka movie. There have only been three adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book. One of them is a classic, the other is a problematic misfire directed by Tim Burton, and the other one is… THIS.

God help us. (And yes, you can bet your butt we’re going to review it when it comes out later this year.)
