Rumor: BioWare is Working on a New Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Game

BioWare Austin is reportedly working on a brand new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game, according to a prominent industry leaker.

Liam Robertson, a trusted source who previously leaked the information that Microsoft and Platinum had cancelled the action-RPG Scalebound, made the revelation on his Patreon page before the news promptly spread to NeoGAF. He noted that BioWare Austin is “pretty much now exclusively working on Star Wars games,” and that the developer is currently in the process of prototyping a revival of Knights of the Old Republic.

BioWare Austin was responsible for the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic, a popular but flawed MMO spin-off of the influential KoToR RPG series. Though The Old Republic had its supporters, fans have been awaiting a new entry in the mainline KoToR series for a while now, with Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords releasing way back in 2004.

BioWare Austin developed the MMO ‘The Old Republic.’

“I’ve learned now that [BioWare Austin is] pretty much now exclusively working on Star Wars games and they’re going to be doing that for the indefinite future,” Robertson said during his Patreon podcast. “What they’re currently working on right now—and I have this on good authority—is a sort of remake/revival of Knights of the Old Republic. I don’t know when this is set to come out, but it has been in development for a little while now.”

“I don’t really know how that game’ll end up,” he continued. “I’ve heard that it isn’t exactly a remake anymore, but it started as a remake/revival. Now it’s kind of going from that blueprint in sort of its own original thing. I guess we’ll see what that turns out to be, but they are prototyping it right now.”

Robertson didn’t reveal specifics regarding the unannounced game, but it sounds as though it will lean on the original KoToR while still providing its own unique twist for the current generation. Considering that the first KoToR is arguably the most celebrated Star Wars game in history, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though many will be hoping that BioWare will be working on a new story set in a galaxy far, far away.
