Film festivals are a great place to discover serious independent cinema, the sort of thoughtful and intimate motion pictures that change the way we view the world and make society better for simply existing. That being said, the SXSW Film Festival is also a great place to watch badasses fuck shit up.
One of the coolest prospects at SXSW 2017 is Atomic Blonde, a new action thriller starring Charlize Theron as a Cold War spy who punches and kicks her way through Berlin. It’s the latest in what could be a very long line of incredible action movies for Theron, after her lead role in the Oscar-winning Mad Max: Fury Road and upcoming, villainous turn in this summer’s The Fate of the Furious.
What’s more, Atomic Blonde is also David Leitch’s long-awaited follow-up to the acclaimed and utterly awesome shoot ’em up thriller John Wick, and it’ll be a great opportunity to watch him grow as a filmmaker before he tackles his next project: Deadpool 2.
Atomic Blonde debuts at SXSW 2017 this Sunday, and you’d better believe we’re going to be waiting in line. In the meantime here are two stylish teases for the film, in advance of the unrated trailer which goes live this weekend.
And of course you’ll be able to see Atomic Blonde for yourself when it arrives in theaters on July 28, 2017.
From the Press Release:
Oscar® winner Charlize Theron explodes into summer in Atomic Blonde, a breakneck action-thriller that follows MI6’s most lethal assassin through a ticking time bomb of a city simmering with revolution and double-crossing hives of traitors.
The crown jewel of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies.
A blistering blend of sleek action, gritty sexuality and dazzling style, Atomic Blonde is directed by David Leitch (John Wick, upcoming Deadpool 2). Also starring John Goodman, Til Schweiger, Eddie Marsan, Sofia Boutella and Toby Jones, the film is based on the Oni Press graphic novel “The Coldest City,” by Antony Johnston & illustrator Sam Hart. Kurt Johnstad (300) wrote the screenplay.
